About Us

Cognition Capital is a registered investment advisor founded to make “data-driven investing,” the investment approach explained by Bill Matson and Mitch Hardy in Data Driven Investing – Professional Edition, available to investors who lack the time, expertise, or personal interest necessary to manage their own stock portfolios.

Cognition provides discretionary investment advisory services for individually managed accounts, including pension, profit sharing, and retirement accounts, and for hedge funds. All client accounts are personally managed by Bill Matson, MBA-Harvard, CFA, CPA.

Each of our separately managed advisory accounts is held in the individual client’s name by Fidelity Brokerage Services, LLC. Clients receive all of the services normally available to Fidelity brokerage customers, including monthly and annual statements and the capability of monitoring their account activity and balances 24 hours a day via Fidelity’s online brokerage platform.

Our fee for separately managed accounts is 0.08333% per month (approximately 1% per year) of the assets under management.

In addition to our separately managed account service, Cognition also manages the Cognition Fund, LP, a hedge fund focused on the stocks of very small companies. Due to regulatory constraints the Cognition Fund is open to investors who can meet certain requirements, including a net worth test. Further information concerning the Cognition Fund is available to qualified investors upon request.

Cognition Capital has a strict policy of always putting our clients’ interests ahead of our own. We strive to serve our clients’ best interests by seeking the best execution of trades at the lowest cost in brokerage commissions, fees, and other expenses, and we avoid any arrangements that might lead to potential conflicts of interest, such as sales commissions, soft dollar compensation, WRAP programs, 12b(1) fees, etc.
